Dickies Sponsor Welsh Model Builder Competition

Dickies was delighted to see Welsh heating & plumbing engineer Gavin Orson crowned the Model Builder In Ffasiwn Bildar, a new S4C series which was recently aired, with the winner being revealed on April 14th.

Plasterer turned model Dylan Garner went on a nationwide search to try to transform the image of Welsh construction workers. Fourteen builders competed in various building and modeling challenges and the overall winner received a cash prize of £3,500 as well as the opportunity to model for the Dickies 2016 Catalogue.

Gavin, 26, said: “Initially, I was nervous in front of the camera, I never knew what to do with my hands when modeling. But once I had a power tool to work with I started to relax and really enjoy the shoots.

“Even though I’m a plumber by trade I was competing against men from a multitude of trades so the practical challenges could be anything. So it required an all-rounder - carpentry, bricklaying and as this was also a modeling competition, I had to try to look good at the same time. During the tasks the judges were also looking at our team work and leadership skills - essential for any good tradesman.

Entertainment Content Commissioner, Elen Rhys said: "We're delighted that Gavin has won this year's Ffasiwn Bildar competition. It has been an entertaining and at times fiercely competitive series. Gavin dazzled the judges, and beat 14 other builders to be crowned the Ffasiwn Bildar winner. He has shown himself to be a fantastic builder and an excellent model. We're grateful that such a well-known worldwide brand like Dickies has worked with us on this show. We're confident that Gavin will be a great role model for builders in Wales."

Gavin added: “I’m a very competitive person and as I progressed through each stage so did my determination to win. I was surprised, however, that after an intense week of filming and modeling that I was down to the final three and I genuinely felt that we all deserved to win as we all had developed so much.  I can honestly say that I had a great time during the process.Gavin hard at work on set

“Winning was awesome. The money has already been divided to complete renovations to my own house and investing in new tools and installing shelves in my own van. I have worked for Highgate Water Solutions for ten years as a head plumbing and heating engineer, but the competition gave me confidence in my capabilities as a plumber and I’ve since set up my own plumbing business - 'Sawel Plumbing and Heating' which is in the early stages of development. The competition money has been a massive help and avoided me having to take out an expensive business loan. I can’t wait to build up my client base and continue developing in my career further. Who knows the model smile may just help seal the deal.

“In addition to the money I was invited to a professional photo shoot and model Dickies workwear for their 2016 catalogue - I’ve worn their clothes for years in work so to actually model them was a great
experience.”
