Charlwood and Stevens Extend Lead at the Top of the Championship in the Company of World Champions

With three rounds left of the British Formula one sidecar championship the championship leaders of Portsmouth driver Ricky Stevens and his Dover based passenger Ryan Charlwood made the long trip over the channel to the 2.9 mile TT circuit at Assen in Northern Holland. Having a 72.5 points lead over their nearest rivals Andy Peach and Charlie Richardson the AOS/BeWiser team were looking to continue their run of seven wins from the last eight races. Two ten lap races would take place over the weekend of the 18th September, which would also include a round of the Dutch sidecar championship in the same races, so there was a full grid of 31 machines. Friday’s two session qualifying session was held in sunshine and then rain. With a combined time for the two sessions the pair qualified second behind the newly crowned Dutch World Champions Streuer and Koerts on their home circuit with second in the championship Peach and Richardson in third place. Afterwards Ricky said “Considering that we haven’t been on the sidecar for seven weeks you have to be pleased with that that in the different conditions.”

Saturday’s race showed yet again how dominate this pair have become. From the start they took the lead and by lap two they were nearly two seconds up on the reigning World Champions. On lap three they broke the existing lap record with an average speed of 100.7 mph. Pulling away on every lap they finished 13 seconds ahead of the World Champions, with their nearest rivals Peach and Richardson in sixth place. Race two was reduced to eight laps and was a battle royale with the World Champions, the former World Champions and Peach and Richardson. The lead changed hands on several occasions before Reeves and Cluze retired. On lap seven Streuer took the lead and then Ricky and Ryan were passed by Peach and Richardson. They crossed the line in third which extended their championship lead to 82.5 points. Afterwards Ricky said “We developed a fault with the front end early in the race which turns out to be a flat tyre on the rear. We are still pleased with the results and the points.” Ryan added “It’s been a great weekend and we can now move onto Silverstone in two weeks time.”
